Yoga was a part of the planned activities made available to participants in the first White House Egg Roll held by the President and Mrs. Obama this year. The theme was “Let’s go play”, and was supported by planned activities for the thousans of children and families who were gathered on the South Lawn of the White House waiting to participate in this White House tradition. President Obama greeted the crowd, extolling the event as one that “reminds us that this is the people’s house.” Mrs. Obama reminded the crowd … “Our goal today is just to have fun. We want to focus on activity, healthy eating. We’ve got yoga, we’ve got dancing, we’ve got storytelling, we’ve got Easter Egg decorating, and we’ve got basketball, soccer as well.” “We want everybody to think about moving their bodies,” she added. The first family then walked to the storytime stage to read to a group of children. Entering the area, President Obama shook hands with many of the children seated in the front row. President Obama read “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, which he called “one of my favorite books.” At the end of the story he asked, “are there any wild things here? I just want to make sure,” and issued a soft wild thing-like growl to the delight of the crowd. Next, Mrs. Obama and her mother Marian Robinson took turns reading “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” by Laura Joffe Numeroff. The first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama turned the pages of an oversized copy of the book to show the illustrations to the children. Music star Fergie sang the National Anthem before the president greeted the crowd. The theme for this year’s egg roll was: "Let’s go play" and sought to encourage America’s youth to lead healthy and active lives.
