![]() One way of relaxing the mind and body in Yoga is through breathing.Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning “lengthening of the prana or breath”. When used as a technical term in yoga, it is often translated more specifically as “breath control.” Pranayama teaches us the proper way to breathe. We have become used to breathing from our chest, using only a portion of our lungs, as a result our bodies are somewhat oxygen deprived, producing an increase of toxins, which can lead to a diminished immune system. With yogic breathing, we strengthen and increase the capacity of our lungs, thus bringing more oxygen to the body. We learn how to breathe slowly and deeply – the right way. Yoga practices that incorporate breathing exercises promote tranquility and peace of mind as well as strengthening and toning our lungs.
