![]() Yoga can be separated into four main paths, or Margas. They are Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Raja Yoga. Each of these paths leads to union with Brahman (or God). It is up to the individual to find the way that is best suited for them, though it can be beneficial to practice a little of all, creating a unification, or blend of yoga.
The four paths are as follows: Bhakti YogaThe yoga of devotion. The path of love and devotion. This path appeals particularly to those of an emotional nature. The Bhakti Yogi is motivated chiefly by the power of love and sees God as the embodiment of love. Chanting or singing the praises of God are a substantial part of Bhakti Yoga. Karma YogaThe yoga of action. The path of selfless service. Karma yoga is selfless service without attachment to the fruits of one's actions. It is the path chosen primarily by those of an outgoing nature. It purifies the heart by teaching you to act selflessly, without thought of gain or reward. Raja YogaThe science of physical and mental control. The path of self control and self mastery. Often called the “royal road” it offers a comprehensive method for controlling the waves of thought by turning our mental and physical energy into spiritual energy. Raja Yoga is also called Ahtanga Yoga referring to the eight limbs of yoga leading to absolute mental control. The main practice of Raja Yoga is meditation. Jnana YogaThe yoga of knowledge or wisdom. The path of wisdom and knowledge. This is the most difficult path requiring tremendous strength of will and intellect. Using will and power of discrimination to cut through the veil of ignorance and attain the truth. Before practicing Jnana Yoga, the student needs to have explored and assimilated the lessons of the other yogic paths – for without selflessness and love of God, strength of body and mind, the search for self-realization cannot be attained. For the jnani, the goal is absolute Truth. For further discussions on the Four Paths of Yoga, please visit our forum by clicking here |
